Really?

Just heard the real reasons why Madness pulled out of the Bluesfest in Australia. Seriously guys, a lot of fans like myself spent a lot of hard earned money on tickets and accommodation just to see you. Very disappointed. I thought you guys were better people than that.
Barbara Reid

Dear Barbara
We all love Australia – but it is a hell of a long way to go for frankly not much money and we were also in Australia three years ago. I took my family on that tour, as I didn’t want to be away from them for two weeks. So it actually cost me in the region of £5,000 to make the trip. “Real reasons?” – I’d like to hear them. We were asked to play at this Festival and we all declined. About three days later I got a message from a fan saying how pleased they were we were playing “Bluesfest”. I was very angry about that and all I found out was that someone in Australia had confirmed it without us agreeing to do it. We were actually advertised as playing “Bluesfest” on a promotional poster, this must have happened sometime before we were even asked! I am very sorry about your predicament but you’ve got plenty of time to get a refund, cancel your accommodation and travel plans. Ask for your money back and you get any problems, tell me.

Believe me – we NEVER confirmed this show.

If we do return at some point, I’ll put you and your family on the guest list.
yours faithfully, CB
PS Happy Christmas X

Chris is a thorough gentleman. Back from Bluesfest and had a great time but would have been superb with the presence of Madness. Still, got my ska fix from The Melbourne Ska Orchestra that did a pretty good job of Nightboat to Cairo. Catching your gig at Chepstow in June. That’s right, I’m coming all the way from Oz to see your good selves.
    Cheers from Oz

    Hi Chris
Just wanted to say I was, or am, in the same boat was as Barbara. Was so disappointed to see you guys apparently pull out of that show. You were the whole reason I forked out for the gig. However your explanation here was very fair and honest, I hope Barbara feels the same way. All the best for 2013, hope you guys can honor us with a show down under again some time. Cheers bro.

Nice one chris, honest and upfront, the very fact someone is able to vent their frustration to you ,and the fact you have the courtsy to reply speaks volumes for you,ive followed madness for many years now and it stands out a million miles that both youself and lee have never forgotten the fans, hope the person effected accepts your explanation.all the best for 2013 mickey g

Good on you for firing this reply off on the big day. Says it all regarding your attitude to fair play with the plans. I know that I’m like thousand upon thousands of people who know your track record regarding fair play for the fans and will always trust you implicitly. Not the first time promoters have pulled a fast one like this. Have a good Christmas and New Year – thanks for 2012, it’s been amazing.
    Ian
